Where to stay in Bardejov
The choice comes down to two places a few kilometres apart, the old town and the spa town, and to what kind of trip you have in mind.
Bardejov is small enough that you can see the historic centre in a day, yet many visitors decide to stay a night or two, because the spa town, the wooden churches and the hills around it are worth more time than a day trip allows. Accommodation here is mostly modest and locally run. You will not find large resort complexes in the old town, but you will find a reasonable spread of options if you know what to look for.
Types of accommodation
- Hotels exist both in and around the town and in the spa area. They suit travellers who want a reception desk, breakfast and predictable standards.
- Guest houses (in Slovak penzión) are the most common choice. They are usually smaller, often family-run, and many have their own restaurant or at least serve breakfast.
- Private rooms and apartments (ubytovanie v súkromí) range from a spare room in a family house to a self-contained flat. They work well for longer stays or for families who want a kitchen.
- Spa accommodation in Bardejovské Kúpele is often tied to treatment stays, although some places also take guests who simply want a quiet base.
Old town or spa town?
Staying in or near the historic centre puts the square, the basilica and the evening walks along the town walls on your doorstep. It is the better choice if you are interested in history, want to eat out in the evening without a drive, or are travelling without a car, since the bus station is close to the centre.
Bardejovské Kúpele is quieter and greener. It lies in a forested valley north of town, with a park, a colonnade and the open-air museum within walking distance. It suits a slower holiday, walkers, and anyone combining sightseeing with spa treatments. Getting between the two is easy by car or local bus, so neither choice cuts you off from the other.
Seasons
Summer is the busiest time, and the spa town has its own steady flow of guests through much of the year. Larger events in town, such as the traditional autumn fair, can fill the smaller places quickly, so check what is happening before you travel; our page on the year in Bardejov gives an overview. Outside these periods it is usually easier to find a room at short notice, though some smaller guest houses scale down in the quietest months.
What to ask before you book
- Is breakfast included, and is there somewhere to eat on site or nearby?
- Is there parking, and is it on the property or on the street?
- How far is it, on foot, to the square or to the spa colonnade?
- For private rooms: is the kitchen and bathroom shared or private?
- Does the price include the local accommodation tax, or is it charged separately?
